Water Is Everything The Daily Drop 3 Ways You Can Use Less Plastic
3 Ways You Can Use Less Plastic
September 5, 2018
There is no perfect alternative to single-use plastic. Instead, the best way to fight this crisis is to curb personal use and change our own habits and mindsets. We asked three of our district managers about some of the ways they are making a difference.
Lolita Duggan, District Sales Manager, Eastern Florida
"I shop in bulk for items like hair and facial products, detergent and yogurt. Since it's hard to avoid the plastic container, I want to be able to use less of them. I've stopped buying hand soap in plastic dispensers and buy nice bar soap instead. Awareness has been huge for me—I've found dental floss that comes in a glass container on Amazon."
Rebecca Randolph, District Sales Manager, Northeast
"I've started to refuse straws at restaurants, and recently when I was out, we ordered drinks at the bar and said, 'Please, no straws.' The couple next to us said, 'Oh my gosh, you saw that video of the sea turtle too?' I told them yes and that it was upsetting to watch, then blurted out, 'If you've seen it, why the heck do you have straws?' They looked a little shocked, but we ended up talking about Water is Everything and how much I've changed my habits. The gentleman ordered a milkshake for dessert and he said 'No straw!'. A little can go a long way."
Mariano Perez, District Sales Manager, Western Florida
"When I have to shop online, I request that no plastic be used in my packaging. I enter the request in the comments field or the spot where they ask if it's a gift, and once I receive a confirmation email, I reach out to customer service and communicate the request again. Sometimes they will ask why, and when I explain you can see the lights go off. It can be tricky due to their standard packing and shipping processes, but I challenge them to figure it out. Once the item arrives, I send Customer Service an email thanking them for helping to reduce the plastic in our oceans."
